It had seemed like a good idea. A nice gesture. A gift. To show we could work together. That I understand what a vampire needs to survive. Instead, it had turned into a sizzling moment of searing connection that had almost brought all my walls down. Because that kiss had left me wanting so much more. I stare at the shake, the vanilla protein base tinted red by the raspberries and the blood I'd added to it. I take a shaky breath and then set the glass container firmly onto the blender base. I shove the lid on and turn the motor on, listening to it whir away as I try to recover some semblance of calm.

The mark on my palm is already healing, partly the result of the spell I'd whispered over it earlier, but also due to the properties of Kane's saliva. It's a natural defense against notice. If someone claims you drank blood from them, but there are no wounds to be found, the accusation fades away as the ravings of a crazy person. Responsible vampires without a death wish seal the marks on those they feed from. A sensible precaution.

But now, the tickling feeling of my skin knitting together makes it impossible for me to forget that Kane's mouth was there, his tongue laving over my palm, and need clenches low in my belly. Every part of me wants to know what it would feel like to have his mouth doing other things to me, and that's a recipe for disaster. We have to stop a terrorist. That's what's important. This strange, instant attraction to a man so full of anger that it leaks from him like a bloody wound of a different kind is a complication we don't need.

When the shake is ready, I turn off the blender, pour it into a tall glass, and carry it out to the living room, a plate of toast with peanut butter and jelly on it in my other hand. Kane is sitting on the couch and I'm relieved to see him wearing a shirt. He glances up at me, his phone in his hand, and waves the screen at me.

"A message. From Julian. He apologized to me for not letting me know about Alexander. And he said to tell you that your instincts were right. They've confirmed the target."

I offer him the drink and he takes it, his fingers grazing mine. Sitting down at the opposite end of the couch, I prop myself against the arm, pull the blanket over my bare legs, and then pull my knees up. I balance the plate there, and take a bite of toast. Kane watches me with interest, and then takes a drink of the shake. He gives a little nod, and then says, "That's really good. I'm definitely less cranky now."

A laugh bubbles out of me and I feel better. Lighter. The awkwardness I'd been afraid of after the moment in the kitchen is gone, and we can focus on what's really important.
